Although coastwise cruising, pottering from port to port, or making short sea passages is capital fun, calling for as much seamanship and prudence as the making of long ocean crossings, or perhaps more, I do not think it fully satisfying. In the same way that rock climbing, though very arduous and exacting, is not so satisfying as mountaineering, of which rock climbing is but one aspect, so short passages fail to yield the sense of fulfillment and achievement won from an ocean crossing and a successful landfall on a new continent.
